Matakohe Area
Matakohe is an area where the first settlers arrived, bringing old English traditions with them. Matakohe produced New Zealand’s first NZ born Prime Minister Gordon Coates. A local memorial church and grounds in Matakohe are dedicated to him.
In recognition to the settlers, a pioneer Museum was built, (The Kauri Museum), where you can experience their lives shown in the the Kauri timber and Gum digging years.
